Papyrus |

Papyrus is the earliest known form of paper on Earth. It was being made in Egypt at least 4,800 years ago.
Our word 'paper' is derived from the Greek and Latin words for papyrus.
Actually a plant that grows along the Nile, papyrus has fibrous stems, which are peeled. The pith is removed, sliced and pounded into strips, which are then laid crosswise, moistened, beaten and pressed into sheets. When dry, the sheets are polished with stone, bone or shell tools, to create a smooth surface for writing or painting.
Today, papyrus is still made by hand in Egypt, using essentially the same process as during the 2nd dynasty, more than two hundred years before the building of the earliest pyramids.
